Commonwealth Southern and East Africa Colloquium on Gender, Culture and the Law
Location: Windhoek, Namibia
Date: 21-23 May 2008
The colloquium is expected to provide insights on women’s claims to rights and resources under laws and customs that are often mediated by social and cultural norms. Based on specific recommendations from the colloquium, the Commonwealth Secretariat will take forward its work on gender, culture and the law. It is therefore seen as a starting point to develop policy and other project-related work on women’s rights, culture and the law in Southern and East Africa. The meeting will have representatives from ministries of gender, law and justice, judiciary, women’s rights organisations, and traditional and religious bodies.
